Work Continues on the 72 F Unit Restoration
By The Loco Brakeman
It may be cold or snowy outside, but a team of dedicated young men have been hard at work most Saturdays during the winter on the restoration of the historic F7 unit, locomotive 72.
Major engine work on the EMD 567C prime mover is nearing completion. One of ITM’s mechanical mainstays, Mitch Montgomery, has been working on 72 for three years, and has recently been joined by a new team of willing volunteers Cameron Nichols, Jeremiah Sheward, William Cate and Aaron Hutchinson.

As work on the prime mover continues, plans for rebuilding the cab controls and locomotive body panels are in the works. The intent is to get 72 completely restored and on the line, which would free up the 83 Monon engine for body work and general maintenance.
Originally a locomotive serving on the Milwaukee Road, this engine was designed for use with slug units. ITM purchased the unit, saving another covered wagon from the scrap heap.
Anyone interested in helping with the 72 restoration should call 773-6000 for details. Work sessions are generally on Saturdays from 9am to 5pm. ITM is also seeking donations to help support this worthy cause!
